CORAL Cove Golf Club surprised even itself when it held its third annual charity golf day to raise much-needed funds for the Challenge Foundation.
The #DoingitforJarrod fundraising event is held in memory of former PGA professional Jarrod Lyle at courses across Australia to raise funds for families affected by cancer.
Anyway, more than 120 players converged on Coral Cove Golf Club in Bundaberg to contest a two-ball Ambrose event, which was played under clear blue August skies.
“Most players dressed in yellow to celebrate Jarrod’s life,” said Coral Cove’s men’s club captain and organiser Peter Sim.
The charity event was won by Shane Bennett and Kaine Beers who travelled from Gladstone, a distance of 180kms, to take part in the event.
The pair returned a nett score of 57.5, just .25 of a stroke ahead of local course superintendent Brett Woodward and club vice-captain Ryan Norton.
“But the golf took second place to the fundraising activities on the day,” Sim said.
“The day kicked off with two local members, Mick O’Ryan and Kevvie Beu, having their very hairy heads and beards shaved off.
“That raised close to $1000 through donations to either participate or just to watch the festivities.”
Both Mick and Kevvie made the cut before attending a barbeque sausage sizzle and chipping competition.
“After the golf was completed, a memorabilia auction was held where a framed JL Day pin flag signed by
Rory McIlroy was sold along with a golf cap autographed by PGA golfers John Senden, Rod Pampling, Robert Allenby and Stuart Appleby,” Sim added.
Along with raffles, yellow tee options for players to purchase on the day and a hole-in-one challenge, the small club raised a massive $9595 for Challenge Foundation charity.
“This exceeded our wildest dreams,” Sim added. “I am so proud of our golfing and corporate communities to get behind this event and make it the success it has been – it’s just amazing”
The club won’t be resting on its laurels for long as it plans holding another major charity event to raise money for breast cancer research.
