WITH his students achieving outstanding results all over the world, Brisbane-based teaching professional Richard Woodhouse is rapidly elbowing his way to the very highest level of Australian golf coaches.

His students include China’s top junior Eric Li, France’s No 1 ranked junior girl Kirra St Laurent, Greg Norman Junior Masters winner Harrison Gomez, and successful professionals Tim Hart, Brett Rankin and William Bruyeres. 

His career received a further boost when Woodhouse was named PGA Queensland Coach of the Year (High Performance) at the state’s golf industry awards in mid-October, beating a field of finalists which included multiple award winner Grant Field.

More than 400 professionals, managers, greenkeepers, elite amateurs, suppliers and their families packed into The Star Casino on Queensland’s Gold Coast to celebrate the golf industry’s greatest achievers.

They included outstanding juniors Sarah Hammett (Junior Female Amateur Golfer of the Year), Chase Oberle (junior male), Quinnton Croker (Male Amateur Golfer of the Year) and Justice Bosio (female amateur).

Pacific Golf Club claimed the coveted Golf Club of the Year award, largely because of its successful transition to a new clubhouse, improvements to the course, including simulators and a mini-golf course, and the installation of a new irrigation system.

Bernard Wilson, who has been at Wynnum Golf Club for just over three years, took the Distinguished Manager Award, and Graeme Andrews, the only paid employee of Tamborine Mountain Golf Club, won the Superintendents Achievement Award.

Angus Porter, who has significantly expanded the golf shop business at Carbrook over the past year, was named PGA Queensland Club Professional of the Year, while Brisbane Golf Club’s young Asha Flynn, the coach and coordinator of the Brisbane District Golf Association’s junior development program, took the PGA Coach of the Year (Game Development) award.

Cairns Golf Club, which provides nine weekly programs for more than 60 juniors, claimed the Junior Golf Program of the Year award, while Greenway Turf Solutions, took home the Golf Supplier of the Year award.

The Mackay Pro-Am was judged Regional Tournament of the Year, while Wynnum Golf Club won awards for its Paul King Memorial Legends Pro-Am (Legends Tournament of the Year) and the Wynnum Pro-Am (Metropolitan Tournament of the Year). The Sanctuary Cove Legends Pro-Am hosted by Adam Scott and Peter Senior was the PGA Tournament of the Year.
