The Shane Doherty Memorial Tri-State Masters, one of Sunraysia’s most popular annual golf events, featured some extra excitement this year, with a pair of golfers driving home in style courtesy of well-timed aces.

During round two of the three-round event, Mark Alvey from Mildura Golf Resort won a Harley Davidson XG500 Street bike valued at $10,000 from Quick-Fix Harley, Mildura, thanks to his ace on the 180m par-3 15th hole at Red Cliffs Golf Club. Playing in the morning field, Alvey’s shot on the 180m hole hit the flag stick on the fly (actually damaging the fibreglass stick itself) and dropped straight into the hole.

Later that day, in the afternoon field, Peter Wight from Tocumwal Golf Club won a Honda Jazz car valued at $18,000.00 from Auto Synergy, Mildura, courtesy of his Ace on 125m uphill par-3 8th.

There had not been a hole in one in the event since 2007, so to have two on the same day at Red Cliffs Golf Club was amazing.  All up, there was over $234,000 in hole-in-one prizes over the week of the event, available on the 20 par-3s over the three days of the actual tournament and the two social golf days.

The event, which is held each year during the 3rd week of May, featured rounds of golf at Riverside Golf Club, Red Cliffs Golf Club and Coomealla Golf Club, with optional additional social rounds of golf at Mildura Golf Club and Coomealla.  This year marked the 23rd running of the event, which honours the legacy of Tri-State Masters founder and tournament director Shane Doherty.

At this year’s Opening Cocktail Party at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club, there were four special presentations made to sponsors of the Tournament who had been involved for 20 years and over:  Trentham Estate Winery, Bridgestone Golf and Sunraysia Daily (23 years, since the inception of the Tournament), and the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club (20 years).  The tournament week also included a BBQ and Trivia night, a trip to Trentham Estate Winery for a Gourmet BBQ lunch, social Lawn Bowls at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club, a Country Roast and Comedy night at Red Cliffs Golf Club, a luncheon river cruise with Wentworth Cruises and an Italian night at the Pizza Café.  The event concluded with the annual Presentation Dinner at the Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club.

All up, it was an amazing week of golf for all 230 players and their non-playing partners.

The Tri-State Masters targets mid-range club golfers who are looking for a golf holiday in which they can combine golf and social interaction with other like-minded golfers from all over Australia and New Zealand.  The trophies and prizes on offer are arguably the best in any amateur golf tournament in Australia.
