The Phillip Island Golf Club recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with a Heritage Golf Day.

Seventy-five years ago, the first official golf competition was held at the Cowes Golf Club, now known as Phillip Island Golf Club.

To celebrate this milestone, the club recently hosted a Heritage Golf Day which was a great day, great fun and a tribute to the rich history of the course.

The club’s journey began on Bill Smith’s 78-acre dairy farm in 1950, Dunsmore Road. The purchase was made possible by 25 local residents and business owners, each investing £100. Later, additional contributors formed what became known as “The Company.”

Local identity Mr A.J. Jones, owner of the Continental Hotel in Cowes and scratch golfer, served as the inaugural Chairman, laying the foundation for what would become an integral part of Phillip Island’s history. Through community effort, Smith’s farm transformed into an 18-hole course, complete with a humble tin shed acting as a clubhouse.

The Heritage Golf Day featured a mixed four-ball competition, with a shotgun start at 12 noon.

Afterwards, players unwound in the clubhouse, enjoyed nibbles and prizes.

An historical display was showcased, offering attendees a glimpse into the club’s rich past. All proceeds from the day went towards the preservation and promotion of the heritage of the golf club.
