THERE’S no place like home and for young Sydneysider Cameron Davis, it feels like years since he’s been able to return to his home club at Roseville (and Monash) and catch up with all his old friends.
Actually, it has! It’s been almost three years since Davis has been able to return home and now he can also celebrate a 2021 US Tour win that saw him soar in the world rankings and earn trips to major championships that he once only ever dreamt of.
“I can’t wait to get home – it’s been too long,” said the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic winner, who has earnings of more than $6.5m at just 27.
“I’m so excited.
“I’m going to be flying in before the [Australian] PGA and staying through until I head back to Hawaii next year.
“So, I’m really looking forward to hearing all the sounds of the kookaburras in the morning and playing the golf courses in front of the fans that I know.”
Part of the reason Davis is so excited is that his game is just about where he wants it and his taste of the big time – the Presidents Cup – has merely whetted his appetite for more of the same.
“It [playing in the Presidents Cup] was certainly stressful, at times,” he said.
“And it was such a super exciting week. It was a very new environment for me to play golf in.
“It’s something that I always wanted to be a part of, ever since I knew it was a thing. I feel like I got the full experience.
“I got to play five matches and when you play five matches regardless of where your game is at, you stand on the first tee again and it feels like you’re leading a major.
“It’s just that big an environment, that big a crowd, everyone’s that loud.”
Davis went on to explain he would take some great memories from that week of playing really good golf under some intense pressure teamed with guys that he had always dreamt of playing alongside like Adam Scott, Si Woo Kim and the entire team.
“It was just an unreal experience and I’m really glad I got to experience it this year and I would love to build on that and be a part of a home game sometime in the future, because it’s, I’m sure, a little different environment when you’re playing in front of home fans rather than 50,000 hoping you miss that putt,” he said.
“I just absolutely loved every minute of it, it was so much fun.
“I love team golf and it’s been a long time since I’ve experienced that, so it was awesome.”
Davis confirmed that he had not fielded any approaches to join LIV Golf but pointed out he was happy to continue to do his own thing.
And part of that ‘thing’ was to win in Australia, win again on the US Tour and possibly contend in a major championship as well.
“Every year I’ve been feeling like I’m getting better and better, so that’s a good overall view,” he said.
“But I would love to win again. I’m trying to win every year.
“I think that’s the kind of goal I’m trying to set for myself and this year I haven’t quite got over the line yet, so I’m hoping for a couple more opportunities to see if I can make that happen.”
