Australian Ladies Professional Golf announced today that a high-class field has been assembled for the ActewAGL Canberra Classic, with 144 players competing for $150,000 in prizemoney on offer at Royal Canberra Golf Club from 9-11 February.
The tournament is co-sanctioned between the ALPG and the Ladies European Tour and will be an official ranking event on the Rolex Women’s World Rankings.
The field will feature three players who are ranked in the top forty on the Rolex Rankings, including 2013 ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open winner, Jiyai Shin (25), 21-year-old English star Georgia Hall (39) and Australia’s number one player Minjee Lee the highest-ranked at 19.
The 144 field is made up with players from thirty-three different countries, with an astonishing 38 players having won tournaments on the major women’s world tours, including 2014 Ladies Masters winner Cheyenne Woods and former world number 1 Dame Laura Davies.
There will also be ten Olympians in the field who represented their respective countries when golf returned as an Olympic sport at the 2016 Rio Games.
Australians Katherine Kirk, Sarah Jane Smith, Sarah Kemp, Stacey Peters, Rebecca Artis and Whitney Hillier are all confirmed starters and will be hoping to get a win on home soil.
Of the Ladies European Tour players in the field, 6 of the top 10 players and 14 of the top 20 from the 2017 Order of Merit will be competing, in addition to 4 players who competed on the LET Team in the 2017 Solheim Cup including the recently announced European Captain for the 2019 matches to be held in Scotland, Catriona Matthew.
There will be seven amateur players competing in the tournament, including two from Golf Australia’s elite squad, two local Canberrians and the winners of both the Greg Norman Junior Masters and Ian Baker-Finch Junior Classic.
Two Canberra based professionals will also be teeing it up, former multiple Ladies European Tour winner Jo-Anne Mills will be returning to competition after a three-year hiatus, along with Yowani based Jordana Keaton.
